For many people, achieving a flat, well-toned tummy can be nearly impossible without surgical intervention. If you struggle with excess skin, weakened or protruding abdominal muscles, and stubborn fat that can’t be resolved by diet and exercise, then a tummy tuck may be the solution for you. Also known as an abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck is often part of a mommy makeover as it removes loose skin and fat while tightening your abdominal muscles to create dramatically firmer, slimmer contours.

The Best Candidates
Those considering abdominoplasty will have loose, sagging abdominal skin, resistant fat, and weakened muscles that won’t tighten up with exercise. Women may consider a tummy tuck following childbirth, while others may choose this procedure after achieving significant weight loss. In both situations, the abdominal skin may have been stretched beyond its capacity to return to normal. If you have with these issues and also have resistant areas of fat, its important to understand that liposuction alone cannot correct this condition; by removing the fat only, the skin could become looser and look worse, so maintaining realistic expectations is important.
Although a tummy tuck will dramatically change the shape and profile of your abdomen, it is not a weight loss procedure. Candidates for this procedure should be at a stable weight. You should consider delaying surgery if you plan on losing a large amount of weight or plan on having more children.
More about Abdominoplasty
During the procedure, an incision will be made across the lower abdomen, near the bikini line, and around the navel. Excess fat will be sculpted away with liposuction, muscles will be repaired and tightened, and excess, sagging skin will be removed. By removing excess skin, many patients may also see a significant reduction in stretch marks in their lower abdomen. Incisions are then sutured and the skin will be bandaged and wrapped in a supportive compression garment to help minimize swelling and promote healing.
With patient comfort and safety in mind, Dr. Davis and Dr. Pyle both utilize the “drain-free” approach to abdominoplasty. Patients no longer have to deal with the discomfort and upkeep associated with temporary drains in the incision site. The drain-free approach provides greater patient comfort, reduces the risk of infection, a may provide a quicker recovery.
As a complimentary service to our patients, our surgeons administer Exparel®, a local anesthetic that lasts 3-4 days, to provide additional pain control. This reduces the need for oral pain medications and enhances the recovery process by improving patient comfort.
Expect a moderate level of discomfort immediately following the procedure. It may be painful for the first few days to stand fully upright, as this particular movement can put strain on the incision site and newly repaired muscles. Most patients find that they’re able to return to light duty within a week or two, although Dr. Davis and Dr. Pyle both recommend refraining from more vigorous activity for several weeks. Many women compare the recovery process as being similar to a C-section.
Although the final results will initially be disguised by swelling, you should quickly be able to see a substantially slimmer and more toned profile. Scar visibility will continue improving over the next several months, and should be hidden by underwear and swimsuits. Many of our patients find that they can fit into smaller clothing sizes and enjoy wearing more form fitting options that flatter their new and improved silhouette.
Dr. Davis and Dr. Pyle have helped patients from Durham, Chapel Hill and all over North Carolina enjoy a positive, rewarding and comfortable cosmetic surgery experience.
